American Armageddon

Victor Davis Hanson // American Greatness

Americans are growing angrier by the day in a way different from prior sagebrush revolts such as the 1960s Silent Majority or Tea Party furor of over a decade ago.

The rage at the current status quo this time is not just fueled by conservatives. For the first time in their lives, all Americans of all classes and races are starting to fear a self-created apocalypse that threatens their families’ safety and the American way of life.

The border is not just porous as in the pre-Trump past. It is nonexistent. Some 2 million people may cross illegally in the current fiscal year—with complete impunity.

  1. Things with Trump seem to have changed drastically. Why is he time after time enduring broken promises by Iran ? Why does he continue to make threats only to at the last minute back off ? Why does he reprimand Israel for attacking Lebanon after Hezbollah fired over a thousand drones and missiles at Israel ? Then only one of our Apache helicopters is downed and he makes more threats. What could possibly be causing this radical change in Trump. Iran has never kept any agreements they have signed. Trump knows that Iran is run by a hideous religious regime bent on the destruction of Israel and the United States. Let us look at all of this and suppose that U.S. intelligence has discovered that Iran has several nuclear weapons with launch capability. Would this explain why the change in Trump. Trump doesn’t want a nuclear war in the Middle East and is keeping this intelligence from Israel because he knows Israel would nuke Iran. There is a rumor that North Korea may have supplied Iran with several nuclear warheads and if true it would explain Trumps behavior. Just a thought.

  2. In general, we will have all the “Featured” things behind the paywall. We will probably post some of those outside from time to time. Not pay-walled will be the usual American Greatness and Podcasts — which people can get in other places anyway. I think it makes sense. Sami

  3. Always a great read VDH. My question is, do you plan on taking all your content (sans American Greatness) behind your new paywall?

It’s obvious enough, for sure. In fact, some of these problems have been seen coming years ago.
The Greatest Generation did so much good. But, among their notable failures were the children of the Silent Generation. They contaminated our education system, brought down work standards, became over confident in personal behavior as well as international behavior. Worse were their children, then came their grandchildren. The Silent Generation would not recognize what their grandchildren have voluntarily done. It is quite sad.

  5. VDH,
I am impressed with how well you eloquently articulate the problems facing our country today. My favorite quotes from your recent “American Armageddon” column:

“In a rebounding economy amid record debt, the government is still sending workers unemployment benefits that are more remunerative than the paychecks they would earn if employed. Such insanity means not only that labor-short employers cannot provide goods and services to American consumers. The new ethos also institutionalizes the pernicious idea that it is smarter to stay home and idle than to get a job and be productive. ”

“Inflation is roaring back as the administration is printing trillions of new dollars that do not reflect commensurate gains in productivity or population. Soaring prices are a direct result of incentivizing the unemployed not to work, while discouraging manufacturers and producers of food, gas, oil, timber, mineral, and metals.”

I think all of our political leaders should understand this and admit that what you’re saying is right on point.
