I see the trend now. Everytime someone affective is doing something good and succeeding for the country, Victor call him a “tragic” hero. Why doesn’t Victor tell us what he really think about these individuals? That they are fools! It sounds like a loser mindset to me. Sorry, Victor. I admire your mastery of history so much. It pains me to say it.
I was thinking about this comment over the past few days. I remember much of Victor’s work from 10-20 years ago focused on the conflict between a rural “tragic” view of life and an urban “therapeutic” view of life. These views are sometimes also articulated as “ancient” and “modern”. I wonder if Victor’s recent focus on trying to identify “tragic heroes” is an expansion/refinement of his prior thesis.
The U.S is just going through a normal cycle. From immigration to its economy.

VDH I think there is a 4th option for Trump.
He thinks he’s running but hasn’t yet come to terms that he is a broken man. Pains me to observe this but there are few things in this world more emotionally devastating than being told over and over something is one way when you absolutely know it’s actually just the opposite. You feel like you’re going crazy… Trump has something akin to PTSD.
Couple that with getting very little if any positive feedback when it’s absolutely clear that he nailed something be it the Abraham Accords or energy independence. When the results are definitive and no one acknowledges this or it’s buried in the media, etc… It’s mentally crushing.
Great show and the previous talk about teachers, administration and equity inclusion commissars rang true for me… They are collectively destroying our bastions of excellence to the benefit of our adversaries. Interesting how we can’t see this but clearly the Japanese are aware.
