    Your surgeon was smoking around ether? Ether is highly flammable and has a low flashpoint.

    I’m not an anaesthesiologist, but I’m quite sure they wouldn’t use ether for a laparoscopic appendectomy as the surgeon cauterizes the tissue with electricity instead of cutting it. Obviously this would create a serious safety risk to you, the patient, as well as everyone else involved. Cauterizing the tissue has the advantage of being less traumatic to the pt. which means a quicker recovery. Preventing a serious fire hazard is also why they use CO2 to inflate the abdominal cavity and not oxygen. Oxygen, like ether, is highly flammable.
