I agree with most of Carlin’s argument about us Boomers, but he leaves out that our parents, the Greatest Generation, set the stage for us to usher in the Age of Stupidity, the Age of Therapy.

The Greatest Generation survived the Great Depression, fought World War II, defeated Nazism, fascism, Japanese imperialism, and eventually Soviet Communism. They worked hard and sacrificed. And when they finally got to start their own families, they said, “We want our children to have everything we didn’t have.” And in giving their children everything the Greatest Generation didn’t have, they failed to give their kids the one thing they did have-their values. And they raised the most spoiled, self-centered, smug generation to that point in American history. We rejected the wisdom of every generation that came before us, because our parents were flawed, and therefore, their values must be invalid.
It’s important to remember that. The Greatest Generation should have put their collective foot in our collective ass when we first came home from college and called them sexist, racist, bigoted.

OK, I wrote that post after the introduction with George Carlin’s clip. Victor brought up this theme when the group addressed the topic later in the podcast.

Just as an update, Zelensky met with Trump after his visit to Scranton and apparently after this podcast was recorded, on Thursday, 26. September.

  3. John Cochrane opines that Pres. Zelinski doesn’t understand the nuances of our political environment? Rubbish; and a reason to discount anything else that he says.

  4. I was referring to the lengthy comment about the Greatest Generation and the collective kicking imagery….truly satisfying analysis.

  5. In Israel we have been just amazed at the dedication and strength of our young soldiers fighting in Gaza and soon in Lebanon… we thought they wouldn’t be up to the task but they have shamed us all and are unifying the country with their clarity on what is important right now for our survival…

  6. Victor- The Greatest Generation parented the Boomer Generation which didn’t turn out well, and the Boomer Generation raised the next generation which didn’t turn out well and that next generation had kids who didn’t turn out well and those kids are not reproducing.

It may be that the last four generations were poor parents.

What is it about the parenting of the generation who bore the Greatest Generation, that their kids turned out to be hard working, self-sacrificing, persistent, courageous, patriotic, and heroic?

Will you like to do a study on the generation that preceded the Greatest Generation?

What were their values, beliefs, and practices in raising children? What kind of personal qualities, and parenting skills did they have that can be reintroduced into American society today? What did they do differently that the next four generations failed to do? Why were they successful as parents? What did they teach their children?

How were Americans different in the generation that preceded the Greatest Generation? Was that culture superior to what we have today and if so, why was it better?
