VDH: Regarding the section of the podcast on the WWII in the Pacific leading up to the surrender of Japan. You mention the atomic bomb, but emphasized the air bombing campaign as probably more significant. However, you did not mention the heroic and possibly decisive contribution of the Navy’s submarine campaign which sunk the majority of shipments into Japan of vital supplies as well as many troop carriers and ships supplying Japanese troops outside Japan. It continue, IMHO, be to be a vastly underreported and under appreciated contribution to our war effort.

Just to clarify, Sami, the drones were reported over US bases in the UK, not here in the US. It is an important detail to have left out.

  3. Dear Professor Hanson (and Sami),

Very interesting and educational (as usual) discussion of the bombing campaigns as well as the development of the long-range bombers used during this time period. I was wondering if you might discuss a WW2 topic that was somewhat new to me, that is the Nazification of the German Church? I recently went to see the new movie ” Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin” about the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The movie delved into the influence of the Nazi Party into the German Church and how they attempted, and successfully, created a Nazi religion with Hitler as the head. I think this would be an excellent topic, and of great interest, to your podcast audience.

On a side note your weekend history discussions have become my favorite. I feel like I am back in school learning again! Thank you very much for this…

    1. World War II has a plethora of interesting components, from the personalities on all sides, to the weaponry and its evolution and impact.
As a side note, Robert S. McNamara was a Major in the Army AurFiece and was Gen. Lenny’s personal bombing statistition. Of course roles were reversed during the JFK Presidency when one ran the USAF and the other DOD.
Lemay was a total hawk on Cuba and JFK a dove., regardless of the blockade and nuclear chess.
The Kingston Trio had the Man Who Never Returned on the MTA.
WWII is historically frightening, because the Nazis got too close. Being borne just before Pearl Harbor always gives me mental pause about the war. On summer jobs I worked with Vets and vividly recall some of the experiences they related.
So far our country has been miraculously blessed in so many ways and dodged those among us who are pure evil.

  4. Deterrence: That ship sailed over a half-century ago when they let Jane Fonda back into the country after her treason in Hanoi.
