Bakersfield, Isfahan, and Commencement at USC

In this episode, Victor Davis Hanson and cohost Jack Fowler analyze LA exodus to Bakersfield, US government forewarning of the Iran attack, Israel’s response, USC cancels commencement speeches, and Bill Maher though disinterested is still unprofessional.

  1. Hi Victor, I grew up in the San Joaquin Valley and in fact went to Castro Lane School in Bakersfield 1st 2nd and 3rd grades before we moved to Visalia in 1955…..

Good stuff today re Bakersfield and what it offers to folks escaping the madness of the left, thank you.

  2. Bakersfield is still a majority conservative town. I went to high school there.

However, it also shares the same elements of dumb liberalism with other CA cities.

Graduated from South High in the late 1960’s. We proudly identified as South High Rebels at the time. I believe the mascot was chosen by the students when the school was founded in 1957.

Our colors were blue and gray and they still are.

However, a few years ago some bright bureaucrats decided that Rebels was a racist term.

So they changed the name to Spartans. This Greek civilization, of course, institutionalized slavery in all its forms during its run.

But, never mind, at least we got rid of Johnny Rebel.

Bakersfield is more sane than most, but when mindless school administrators can inflict their will upon the rest of us, they certainly will do so.

Nobody asked the thousands of South High graduates what they thought of the name change. My polling indicates a 99% disapproval rate for the switch.

Hey, you don’t know me, but you don’t like me
You say you care less how I feel
But how many of you that sit and judge me
Ever walked the streets of Bakersfield?

    1. So, what are your complaints here?

I swam at Beale Park and shopped for toys at Brundage Variety when we lived in Bakersfield….

  4. I may be one of a select a few, but I believe Jack Fowler and Sammy Winc do an incredible job each time here on the Victor Davis Hanson show, and should be lauded at every turn.

Needless to say, Professor Hanson is the star of the podcast, but without the hard work of these two hosts, it wouldn’t be the same great listening week after week. Bravo to all three of you!

  5. Bakersfield. Lousy air but the best people. Retired here 7 years ago because of family who’ve lived here for years. Love it. A red bubble of sanity afloat on a sea of blue California absurdity. City government, the courts, and the PD seem to do their jobs. Have lived in both LA and SF and cannot believe what has happened to them. Pray this city can hold the line against the madness.
