I was listening to your podcast today and you mentioned China’s strategy regarding trade imbalance puzzles you. I keep remembering visiting China and seeing the massive overbuilding and investment schemes that finally collapsed with massive financial losses for ordinary citizens. The overbuilding was a way of having full employment with skilled workers pay and a way to earn interest on their money. It would seem loosing lots of jobs through a tariffs war is very destabilizing and Zi risks being overthrown. Starting a war would take the focus off him short circuiting a revolution.
OK, you have commercials, understood. And we have the Skip feature for the true commercials, the ones that represent breaks in the podcast. But Sami is going to read a commercial for the same product IN the podcast? Really?
Remember there was a series of trade negotiations with China from 2018 up through Fall of 2019 in which tariffs and many other restrictions were brought up, culminating with an unsigned ‘Phase One’ deal, after which Chile withdrew from sponsoring continuing talks between Trump and Xi. At the time, my feeling was that Trump had succeeded in putting Xi in his place. But then we got Covid. I feel like China contributing to scare mongering tactics at the beginning of Covid as well as supporting lockdowns that grievously did harm the global economy were at least partially in retaliation against Trump for the maneuvers during the trade discussions. And what Trump is doing now is a continuation of where we left off in 2019, but with extreme prejudice for all that has occurred in the interim.

:
I can’t believe the democrats. The democrats have preached since the mid 90’s the tariffs are stealing our industries.
Now because they hate Trump so much they think he is doing the wrong move.
Trump has accomplished what the past presidents have not. Trump has stood up for the American middle class that have lost good paying jobs. So now most middle class that do not have a trade are working at Walmart etc.
But we have AOC and Crocket to save the world, now II can sleep at night.
Amen Victor! My father-in-law was fortunate enough to sell his 300 acre walnut ranch around 2000. Had he kept running it he would likely have lost everything. Guess who bought it…. The Nature Conservancy did because it was along the Sacramento River and they wanted to purchase $10,000 / acre land and turn it into $100 / land. Likely ultimately paid for by the tax payer via all the waste DOGE continues to uncover.
