  1. Professor, thank you for remembering East Palestine. and thank you for the info on Hoplite warfare. However, now when I hear about Hoplite warfare, I will think of Rugby Scrums, and when I hear about Alexander the Great, I will think of NFL Football. And even though Warfare and Sports are different, there is an underlying sameness between them.

I always enjoy when the Professor gives an exegesis on the ancient world, or anything else, truth be told. I wonder if the Professor would share his learning and thoughts on the campaigns of the Maccabees against the Seleucids. This could be great for the coming holiday season. Some of the issues include: Why did the Seleucid forces triumph over the Ptolemies (is it a matter of strict devotion to their faith, as the Professor has compared a later failing Rome with Constantinople); How did the light infantry Maccabees defeat the heavy infantry; and what was the role of the upstart Rome. The Maccabees made the path straight for what was to come. a 150 or so years later as a child from Nazareth would not have been found praying in the temple of Zeus.

What do you know about the Chinese Navy’s ability to conduct underway replenishment (UNREPs). That is what produces a “blue water” (global) Navy. I see pictures of their carriers and frigate-types but not their logistical ships or pictures of them UNREPing out at sea.

Americans learn about drip irrigation just as quickly as others when put in the right situations. One of my sons-in-law came from southwest Kansas where his German-American Mennonite father farmed feed corn. Like his grandfather did, his father had his two sons out in the fields well before dawn and when drip irrigation came into popularity, he bought it and caused his sons to learn it just like they had learned farm equipment repair. Kris earned his Bachelor of Science from KU in Broadcast Journalism but went into drip irrigation equipment sales and moved to central Florida. When I would visit, I would spend a day or two accompanying him on his rounds and learned about emitters and such. I watched Kris run computations in his head, after which the client would repeat it on paper or with a smart phone and get the same results. It was the result of his father’s Mennonite culture. His dad told me that when his father had to bring out a mechanic to fix a new type of equipment, he told the boys to pay attention because the mechanic wouldn’t be coming again.
