Victor speaks glowingly about family members who served during WWII and then came home to live normal, productive lives. Being slightly older than Victor, I remember the same sort of people growing up. These people had character…despite being imperfect and not having solved the country’s segregation problems, etc. at the time.
The country has changed. So many people who present themselves now are characters without character, as displayed in Victor’s Angry Readers. Intellectual integrity is eschew in education; virtue is absent from justice; the ethos of media is personal interest. Character demands at least honesty and rationality, otherwise one does not know what improvement is or when it is obtained.
To those with Western Epics, Tragedy, Philosophy coursing through their minds, the instinct is that logic would awaken our adversaries to reality. But those dominated by feeling rather than honesty and rationality are impervious to logic. Therefore, determining what facts are and what to do about them, not only seems impossible, it provides a fault sense of corrective effort. My point is that change comes from (broad national) character–Victor’s Beatitudes change–and not rational dialogue. This isn’t your Best Generation.
