Dr. Hanson spoke to French Southeast Asian colonies but not Dutch. In 1970 VADM James Calvert (first to surface a submarine at the North Pole) addressed the seniors at the Naval Academy on his personal opinion on Vietnam since many of us were heading there. After WW II two allies came to us with problems in SE Asia; our good allies, the Dutch and our not-so-good allies the French. We are always Europe-oriented and were concerned with NATO. We knew the Dutch would join, but not the French, so we told the Dutch to go pound sand and went to help the French. (and what a boon to NATO France was). Sukarno threw the Dutch out of Indonesia and,, later, Suharto threw Sukarno out. We got involved with the French in Vietnam and, in our typical Baby Huey (I wanna help, I wanna help) fashion, went plodding in.

    Dear Dr. Hanson:

I’m very grateful for your explanation of the Epstein imbroglio. It covers all the known facts without making unnecessary assumptions. Unfortunately it has spawned conspiracy theories at a rate and luridness almost without precedent since the Kennedy assassination on both the Left and Right. Thus I believe that your idea about how this scandal can be resolved strikes me as being overly optimistic: Conspiracy theories do not yield to rational rebuttals, least of all Occam’s Razor. The timing of the Epstein issue is really unfortunate since for the first time since Trump’s inauguration and so close to the onset of the midterm campaigns, Trump’s polling has begun to slip. AG Bondi committed a major blunder when she originally raised unrealistic expectations around the contents of the Epstein “files.” Of course, however, the Democrats’ characteristically mendacious response is an equally serious factor.
