Professor, thank you for your talk on the classics. It is a marvel that the insights of the First Enlightenment are still being felt. Even their scientific observation of four “elements” (Water, Wind, Earth, and Fire) corresponds to the modern four states of matter (Liquid, Gas, Solid, and Plasma).

  2. On “Teaching the Classics”: As a young student over 40 years ago at Cal State studying economics and accounting to support my anticipated career in the tech industry, I was required to take courses in the humanities well outside my interests at the time. Supposedly this was part of the university’s mission to create a better, more well-rounded student. And like most young, ambitious students, I found this annoying and a waste of my time.

One of the courses was “Classical Greek Tragedy”, which seemed like a joke to me at the time, but it fit in my schedule and didn’t look that it would be too much of a drain. Little did I know at the time how this one class would explosively widen my horizon on history and the human condition. Hardly a week has gone by in my life since where something I learned in this one class has not impacted my outlook on current events or my personal life in some way. So yes, I am a big believer in the classics, and am saddened by the aggressive war against history that is now taking place to erase and rob the next generation of the best of western civilization.

Our final for the semester was staging Aristophanes Lysistrata. In addition to handling the technical staging, my participation involved constructing and walking on stage wearing an 18-inch phallus. I can’t imaging that happening today in a public university as it certainly would be considered sexual harassment, if not a hate crime.

I wonder if that class as I knew it is still around.
