Gadgetman48, you are correct. The Wasp series of radial engines was made by Pratt & Whitney, not Allison. Allison made the inline engines used in the P-40, the P-39, the P-38, and in the original model of the P-51A. The British had the idea of pairing the Mustang with the Rolls-Royce Merlin, and Packard built it under license for the P-51s.

Also, the Grumman fighters were the F4F Wildcat, and the F6F Hellcat. The Navy’s designations were type of aircraft+the number of that type produced by the manufacturer+manufacture. F4F meant a fighter, the 4th fighter type made by manufacturer F, Grumman. Vought’s code was a U, so, F4U, a fighter, the 4th fighter type, made by Vought.

And as far as the Zero was concerned, it outperformed US and British fighters in climb, maneuverability, range, and speed in level flight. However, it could not out-dive American fighters. US Navy pilots knew to dive away, but that was already part of their training. It’s a bit of a myth that they entered the war not knowing how to deal with the Zero. The Navy trained its pilots in deflection gunnery, firing from angles to the side, above, below, or astern and NOT to dogfight. And to dive away. The casualties came when pilots forgot this in the heat of combat.

Chennault in China with the AVG also taught his pilots not to dogfight the more nimble Japanese fighters but to attack from above whenever possible, diving and using 6 .50s to tear apart the lightly built and lightly armored Japanese.

  2. Sorry, but Sami speaks too long re the items that VDH should discuss. This is wasting our time, we just need to hear from Victor.
