It is uncommon that I’d find a divergence of opinion with you regarding eastern European politics, & perhaps I’ve just misunderstood what you said in a recent podcast. This regards the Russian & Ukraine crisis and the concerns Putin would have for Ukraine entry into the 32-country NATO alliance. Agree with your comments that nobody really wants to risk a nuclear war to prosecute a war between two former republics of the USSR. You made a comment referencing Bolton & Kristol war-mongering the Ukraine conflict and how George HW Bush publicly stated Ukraine will not be a NATO state because “it puts NATO at Putin’s doorstep”. But is it not the case that there are already 6 NATO signatories on Putin’s doorstep: Finland, Norway, the 3 Baltic States and Poland (remembering that the Kaliningrad Oblast is still a part of Russia)? To what degree then does adding a Ukraine NATO membership represent a bigger NATO threat? It makes more sense to me to follow the Trump plan to push Putin back (as you said) to Feb 24 2022 borders, concede the Donbass, set up a DMZ skirmish line, allow Ukraine to rebuild, re-institute presidential elections, and then at a later date allow Ukraine to apply for NATO membership (i.e. not while they’re in the throws of active conflict).
