Dr Hanson as information for your listeners regarding President Biden I want people to understand a medical condition called “Anosognosia”. It is common in patients with a number of neurological conditions, especially cognitive deficits. It is extremely relevant to President Biden’s “denial” that anything is wrong with his cognitive abilities. Anosognosia is NOT denial of your condition but part of brain’s dysfunction where you do not have the capacity of self recognition of your deficit’s. The reason so dangerous for patient and caregivers is if patient, particularly with cognitive deficits, is unable to recognize them then the patient is significant risk for injuries, poor decisions, scams etc. President Biden may not be in denial but as a physician his behavior is classic anosognosia. The late, eminent neurologist Oliver Sacks described anosognosia thus: It is not only difficult, it is impossible for patients with certain right-hemisphere syndromes to know their own problems – a peculiar and specific ‘anosognosia,’ as Babinski called it.
