More Mumbais?

by Victor Davis Hanson

NRO’s The Corner

The synchronized attacks in Mumbai, by their targeting and timing, designed both to do the maximum amount of damage and to be iconic in nature, frame the recent assassination of a Karzai brother, the shake-up in American command, announced pullbacks, quite understandable curtailing of US aid to Pakistan, and a general impression by Islamists (assuming they indeed turn out to be the culprits) that a weary and insolvent US is retreating into multilateral irrelevance, resulting in not much deterrence left against radical Islam in that part of the world. The Global Fairness Madness

by Victor Davis Hanson

National Review Online

Whether in the fights over the US debt limit or the rioting in Athens, the common global theme is not poverty in absolute terms, but more often fairness — as in having about the same amount of things as others do. Continue reading “The Global Fairness Madness”

St. Obama and the Debt Dragon

“Reckless Fiscal Policies”

Why did Obama only enumerate George W. Bush’s big spending as responsible for the out-of-control $14 trillion-plus debt, while not mentioning his own contribution of $5 trillion? Continue reading “St. Obama and the Debt Dragon”

The Demagogic Style

by Victor Davis Hanson

National Review Online

The noun dêmagôgos first appeared in Thucydides’ history, mostly in a neutral, only slight disparaging way (usually in reference to the obstreperous Cleon), in its literal sense of “leader of the people.” Continue reading “The Demagogic Style”

NRO’s The Corner

One of the reasons the president did not sound convincing in his press conference yesterday is that he has taken so many positions on the debt andtaxes that it is hard know what his current one is, or whether to take it seriously, much less to gauge how long it will last. There Are No Socialists

by Victor Davis Hanson

PJ Media

Are There Really Socialists?

Two unconnected developments were announced this past week. President Obama is releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, despite the absence of a global embargo or horrific natural disaster — and despite a litany of assertions from 2008 that drilling and increased supply might only have a marginal effect on prices. The Evidence of a Bankrupt Populism

by Victor Davis Hanson

NRO’s The Corner

Editor’s Note: These passages are drawn from recent articles on The Corner.

Obama’s Real Legacy

Barack Obama’s cries from the heart as a senator about the possibility of a Bush intervention in Iran being a de facto violation of the War Powers Act have been widely circulated — juxtaposed to his sophistic gymnastics about bombs over Libya not really being much more than “kinetic action” and thus exempt from the Act.
