Within the context of keeping the Syrian jihad alive, it seems there is no end to the attempts of some Islamic clerics to legitimize otherwise forbidden behavior in order to\u00a0gratify the sexual urges of the jihadis<\/a>\u00a0and keep them fighting Syrian president Bashar Assad.<\/p>\n

First, there was the now infamous \u201csex-jihad<\/a>\u201d fatwa, which holds that any Muslim woman who willingly allows her body to be used by the sexually-deprived jihadis becomes herself a jihadi, if not a \u201cmartyr,\u201d deserving of all the honor and rewards associated with those titles.\u00a0 (Much has been written about the sex jihad, including\u00a0videotaped testimonials<\/a>\u2014and how one teenage girl, after copulating with countless jihadis,\u00a0got pregnant and contracted aids<\/a>\u2014even as pro-Syrian war Western entities like\u00a0Foreign Policy<\/em>\u00a0try to deny it<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Another fatwa permitted the jihadis in Syria to\u00a0enslave and rape any non-Sunni women<\/a>\u2014including Alawites (Assad\u2019s sect), Christians, Druze, and all Shia\u2014in the context of their status as\u00a0melk al-yamin<\/em>\u00a0or \u201cright hand possessions<\/a>,\u201d per Koran 4:3 (a verse that permits the enslavement and sexual use of conquered \u201cinfidel\u201d women).<\/p>\n

Now, the same Islamic cleric who issued this last \u201crape fatwa\u201d has issued another fatwa urging destitute women in war torn Syria to become the \u201cright hand possessions\u201d of any man willing to support them\u2014basically, to sell themselves into sex-slavery.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0that appeared in December 2013, Jordanian Sheikh Yassin al-Ajlawni, who says he lived in Syria for 17 years, asserted that \u201cthe needy, disenfranchised Syrian woman is permitted to ask the Muslim man who is capable of supporting her, to enter into a \u201cright hand possession\u201d contract with him, whereby she becomes his right hand possession.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ajlawni\u2019s logic is that, because Syria is in a state of war, and the numbers of men are dropping, needy and displaced women are permitted to seek out support by selling themselves into concubinage.<\/p>\n

In the Muslim sheikh\u2019s own words:<\/p>\n

We hereby give fatwa permitting the Syrian woman who desires to be married to a Muslim man, via a \u201cright hand possession\u201d contract\u2014whereby he becomes her master and she becomes his slave\u2014that all this contract needs is for the woman be clean of her menstruation period, and that this contract be registered with the sheikhs or other authorities, either in a Sharia or civil court\u2026\u00a0 Afterwards, once the woman says, \u201cI give you possession over myself,\u201d via contract of \u201cright hand possession,\u201d this woman becomes his loyal servant, and he her lord; she becomes a slave and concubine to him, and he must support her according to a previously agreed upon monetary fee \u2026 thus they become governed by the rulings of \u201cright hand possession,\u201d and there is no problem with this, Allah willing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To bolster his fatwa, al-Ajlawni referred to a few hadiths (recorded words and teachings of Islam\u2019s prophet Muhammad),\u00a0including<\/a>: \u201cOne of the signs of the [final] hour is that knowledge will decrease, ignorance will increase, adultery will appear, women will grow in numbers, while men will grow less, so that fifty women will be worth one [man].\u201d<\/p>\n

Al-Ajlawni also cited a\u00a0hadith<\/a>from the canonical\u00a0Sahih Bukhari<\/em>, which has the prophet saying: \u201cwheneverfitna<\/em>\u00a0[sedition from Islam] becomes widespread, Allah distinguishes his followers, so that 50 women follow one man, saying, \u2018Oh Abdullah [\u201cslave of Allah\u201d], take care of me,\u2019\u201d adding that in the same narrative the woman says, \u201cO Abdullah, have sex with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

In closing, the sheikh said: \u201cWe call on the ulema of Syria to adopt this [fatwa], for it is the only legitimate way to guarantee that displaced Syrian women who have no one to rely on but Allah are not physically or sexually exploited or beaten in ways that contradict Sharia.\u00a0 All prayers and blessings upon our prophet.\u201d<\/p>\n

While one may rationalize such fatwas away in the context of the chaotic situation in Syria, the fact is, the same fatwa, the same logic, was earlier issued in Egypt, soon after Muhammad Morsi became president in 2012.\u00a0 Then,\u00a0Egypt\u2019s first \u201csex slave\u201d marriage<\/a>\u00a0took place, when a woman declared before her future master-spouse, \u201cI enslave myself to you,\u201d before they kissed to an applauding crowd.<\/p>\n

The justification for \u201cright hand possession\u201d marriages in Egypt was not displaced and destitute women, but rather young, sexually-frustrated men not able to afford wives, and women who wish to dress promiscuously\u2014since the rules governing female \u201cright hand possessions\u201d forbid them from wearing the hijab (as sex-slaves, they are required to be partially naked, differentiating them from Muslim women,\u00a0as explained by this Kuwaiti woman<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
