Time and again, Muslims, especially those in Egypt,\u00a0project Islamic thinking onto Christians<\/a>: thus the Coptic church has been\u00a0accused<\/a>\u00a0of smuggling and storing weapons in its churches to take over the nation (when in fact mosques are regularly exposed housing illegal weapons for the jihad); of kidnapping and torturing Coptic girls who convert to Islam (when in fact Muslim converts to Christianity\u2014apostates\u2014are regularly beat, imprisoned, and sometimes killed); and even of supporting suicide-attacks when the church speaks of Copts being martyred (because in Islam being \u201cmartyred\u201d so often means actively sacrificing one\u2019s life in \u201choly war\u201d).<\/p>\n

Now a well know cleric in Egypt\u2014the same who insists that\u00a0Muslim husbands must hate their non-Muslim wives<\/a>\u2014has just proclaimed that Jesus was against the idea of separation of church and state and that he supported the idea of jizya, the Koran-mandated tribute conquered non-Muslims, or dhimmis, are required to pay their overlords, \u201cwith willing submission,\u201d per Koran 9:29.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Yusuf Burhami, the most visible leader of Egypt\u2019s Salafi movement\u2014which, since the ousting of the Brotherhood, has become the primary Islamist party imposing Sharia in the new constitution\u2014recently issued an Arabic-language\u00a0fatwa<\/a>\u00a0arguing that the biblical statement attributed to Jesus\u2014\u201cRender unto Caesar the things that are Caesar\u2019s and unto God the things that are God\u2019s.\u2019\u201d (Matt 22:21)\u2014could not, as widely held by Christians, have meant that Jesus supported the separation of church and state, \u201cbecause,\u201d in Burhami\u2019s words, \u201ca separation between state and religion contradicts the texts of the Koran.\u201d<\/p>\n

By way of example, Burhami quotes the Koran in his fatwa, including verses like \u201cIndeed, the matter belongs entirely to Allah\u201d (Koran 3:154), which mainstream Islamic exegesis holds as meaning all earthly matters\u2014all laws\u2014must be decided by Allah, hence the totalitarian nature of Sharia law.<\/p>\n

Asserts Burhami: \u201cIt\u2019s impossible for the Masih [Messiah, Jesus]\u2014peace be upon him\u2014to call for the separation of state and religion, as meaning that politics are to be governed without the Sharia of Allah.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, according to the Salafi leader, the \u201ctrue\u201d Jesus\u2014the\u00a0Muslim one<\/a>, Isa, who is a supporter of Sharia\u2014made that assertion to confirm that conquered populations must pay tribute\u2014jizya; or, in the context of Jesus\u2019 discussion concerning the image of Caesar on a coin, that 1st\u00a0century Jews were obligated to pay tribute to the Romans.<\/p>\n

Thus, by rendering tribute to Caesar, Jews were also\u2014as there is no separation between religion and state according to Burhami\u2014rendering unto God what is God\u2019s, since it is God (or \u201cAllah\u201d) who calls on them to pay tribute, or jizya.\u00a0 That, according to the Salafi party of Egypt is what Jesus meant.<\/p>\n

In the backdrop of Burhami\u2019s fatwa are growing calls to make Egypt\u2019s Christian Copts pay jizya to the state, as they historically did, as the Koran demands, and as vigilante Muslims arecurrently forcing them to do<\/a>\u00a0through violence.<\/p>\n

Koran 9:29 calls on Muslims to fight and subjugate the \u201cpeople of the book\u201d (Jews and Christians) \u201cuntil they pay jizya [tribute] with willing submission and feel themselves utterly subdued.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 If followed to the letter\u2014and of all Muslims, Salafis most seek to follow the letter of the Koran\u2014along with paying tribute, Copts would also be required to \u201cfeel themselves utterly subdued,\u201d that is, far from being equal citizens of Egypt, they would be relegated to third-class status.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, if Muslims like Burhami are projecting Islam\u2019s worst traits onto Christians (and onto Christ), Westerners are projecting Western civilization\u2019s best traits (ironically born of Christian teachings)\u2014including tolerance and pluralism\u2014onto Muslims and thus incapable of believing the ugly reality of Christian suffering under Islam.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
