{"id":667,"date":"2012-07-02T23:20:14","date_gmt":"2012-07-02T23:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/victorhanson.com.108-166-28-151.mdgnetworks.com\/wordpress\/?p=667"},"modified":"2013-02-19T23:24:31","modified_gmt":"2013-02-19T23:24:31","slug":"germany-may-destroy-europe-for-the-third-time-really","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/victorhanson.com\/wordpress\/germany-may-destroy-europe-for-the-third-time-really\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Germany May Destroy Europe for the Third Time&#8217;&#8211;Really?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Victor Davis Hanson<\/p>\n<p>NRO&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Corner<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In open worries that the EU disaster may spread to the US and thereby endanger the reelection of Barack Obama, campaign consultant Bob Shrum recently\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2012\/06\/11\/does-barack-obama-need-a-friend-like-bill-clinton.html\">wrote<\/a>:<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If Chancellor Angela Merkel remains unyieldingly wedded to austerity or finally reacts too slowly and too late to the euro-zone crisis, Germany may destroy Europe for the third time in a century \u2014 this time, without firing a shot. The contagion could poison our economy too.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That seems unhinged.<\/p>\n<p>You could legitimately argue that Germany won European supremacy without firing a shot; and you could even argue that Germany did well by spreading the risk of recklessly loaning to non-credit worthy Mediterranean economies so that they could buy lots of German goods.
