President Obama announced that the messy rollout of Obamacare is \u201cunacceptable.\u201d\u00a0Like \u201cgame-changer\u201d used in conjunction to threats in Syria and Iran, \u201cunacceptable\u201d does not necessarily mean something will stop. Instead, we should understand the president\u2019s definition of \u201cunacceptable\u201d in its narrowest meaning of \u201cunpleasant\u201d rather than more expansively as an assertion that something will not continue to occur.<\/p>\n

In February 2011, Obama characterized the violence in Libya as \u201cunacceptable.\u201d\u00a0In March 2012, he warned Iran that it would be \u201cunacceptable\u201d for it obtain nuclear weapons, adding \u201cI don\u2019t bluff.\u201d In September 2012, Obama warned that the violence in North Africa that supposedly followed the release of an anti-Muslim video was \u201cunacceptable.\u201d In December 2012, Obama warned that if Syria used WMD it would be \u201ctotally unacceptable\u201d (as opposed to just \u201cunacceptable\u201d). The same month he warned Mohamed Morsi in Egypt that ongoing violence is \u201cunacceptable\u201d. In May 2013 Obama warned that it would be \u201cjust simply unacceptable\u201d if the IRS in partisan fashion had gone after particular groups.<\/p>\n

Given past usage, when he says \u201cunacceptable\u201d I think the president means that the health-care fiasco is kind of bad right now, but not so bad that as commander-in-chief he will ensure the problem is rectified.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
