Moses Thliza, head of a Christian organization dedicated to preventing AIDS and caring for AIDS patients and orphans:\u00a0 Said Thliza: \u201cMy cousin, Bulus [Paul] Buba, was dragged out at gunpoint from his house by the Boko Haram members. They collected his car keys, demanded money and asked him three times to renounce his Christian faith, and three times he declined to do so [prompting them to execute him]. The attackers met three guards on duty, killed two of them by cutting their necks with knives, and then proceeded to take the third guard, Amtagu Samiyu, at gunpoint to lead them to where the keys of the deputy governor\u2019s house is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for some Christians observing a wake two kilometers away, Boko Haram Muslims asked to know what was going on there, and when they learned that people were saying prayers for an elderly Christian woman who had died, they charged in and shot into the crowd. \u201cThe attackers went there and shot indiscriminately at the worshippers, killing eight Christians\u2014two women and six elderly men,\u201d said Thliza. \u201cIn all, we buried 14 Christians. Some were injured and taken to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite all this, when the Nigerian government tried militarily to confront and neutralize Boko Haram, the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.raymondibrahim.com\/islam\/obama-administration-calls-for-the-human-rights-of-jihadi-murderers\/\">Obama administration criticized it<\/a>, warning it not to violate the \u201chuman rights\u201d of the Islamic terrorists.<\/p>\n<p>Categorized by theme, the rest of May\u2019s roundup of Muslim persecution of Christians around the world includes (but is not limited to) the following accounts, listed by theme and in country alphabetical order, not necessarily according to severity:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Church Attacks<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bosnia<\/strong>: The Serbian Orthodox church of Saint Sava in Sarajevo, where Muslims make up approximately half of the population, was \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pravoslavie.ru\/english\/61741.htm\">desecrated<\/a>\u201d and six of its windows panes broken.\u00a0 The unidentified vandals wrote \u201cAllah\u201d in dark paint twice on the church wall.\u00a0 A month earlier, unidentified persons tried to set the church on fire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>Central African Republic<\/strong>:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>According to the Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace, since an Islamic rebel leader proclaimed himself president, the situation for Christians, has \u201cdeeply worsened.\u201d The organization warns against \u201cthe\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fides.org\/fra\/attachments\/view\/file\/Message_de_la_Commission_Episcopale_Justice_et_Paix.doc\">evil intentions<\/a>\u00a0for the programmed and planned desecration and destruction of religious Christian buildings, and in particular the Catholic and Protestant churches\u2026.\u00a0 All over the country the Catholic Church has paid a high price.\u201d Several dioceses have been seriously damaged and plundered, and priests and nuns attacked (more information below, under \u201cDhimmitude.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aina.org\/news\/20130518152333.htm\">Two Coptic Christian churches were attacked<\/a>, one in Alexandria, the other in Upper Egypt.\u00a0 St. Mary in Alexandria was attacked by Molotov cocktails and bricks, causing the gate to burn and the stained glass windows to shatter.\u00a0 One-thousand Christians tried to defend the church against 20,000 Muslims screaming \u201cAllahu Akbar\u201d [\u201cAllah is Greater\u201d]. One Copt was killed and several injured.\u00a0 In the village of Menbal in Upper Egypt, after \u201cMuslim youths\u201d harassed Christian girls\u2014including hurling bags of urine at them\u2014and Coptic men came to their rescue, another Muslim mob stormed the village church of Prince Tadros el-Mashreki. They hurled stones and broke everything inside the church, including doors and windows. The mob then went along the streets looting and destroying all Coptic-owned businesses and pharmacies and torching cars. Any Copt met by the mob in the street was beaten.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iran<\/strong>:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Because it refused to stop using the national Persian language during its services\u2014which makes the Gospel intelligible to all Iranian Muslims, some of whom converted\u2014the Central Assemblies of God Church in Tehran was raided by security services during a prayer meeting; its pastor taken to an unknown location, and the church was searched and its books, documents and equipment seized.\u00a0\u00a0 Security agents posted a sign stating that the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/barnabasfund.org\/US\/News\/Archives\/Church-in-Iran-closed-over-refusal-to-stop-services-in-Farsi.html\">church was now closed<\/a>. One local source said, \u201cThey constantly threaten the church leaders and their families with imprisonment, unexplained accidents, kidnapping and even with execution. We cannot go on like this<em>.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 A number of its members have already been killed and its activities greatly restricted over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Libya<\/strong>: The Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception in Benghazi was bombed.\u00a0 In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fides.org\/en\/news\/33702-AFRICA_LIBYA_Attack_near_the_Catholic_church_in_Benghazi#.UfVhM42TioM\">the words<\/a>\u00a0of the Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli, \u201cThey put a bomb at the entrance of the corridor leading to the courtyard where there is the door of the church. The church, therefore, was not touched directly, but the attack is not a positive sign. The Church in Libya is suffering. In Benghazi the Coptic Church was hit, its chaplain was killed and now the Catholic Church.\u00a0 As I reported on other occasions, in Cyrenaica different religious women\u2019s institutes have been forced to close their doors, in Tobruk, Derna, Beida, Barce, as well as in Benghazi. The nuns who were forced to leave, served the population with generosity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syria<\/strong>:\u00a0 A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fides.org\/en\/news\/33551-ASIA_SYRIA_In_Mesopotamia_the_church_of_the_Franciscans_in_Deir_Ezzor_has_been_destroyed#.UfVhs42TioM\">violent explosion destroyed the church<\/a>\u00a0and convent of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars in Deir Ezzor. According to Fr. Haddad of the region, \u201cIt was the only church in Deir Ezzor [that] so far still remained almost untouched.\u201d It is not clear how it was destroyed, but some say a car bomb was placed next to the church. Fr. Haddad lamented that, as in other regions, \u201cthere are no more Christians\u201d left in Ezzor, due to \u201call this hate and desecration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tanzania<\/strong>:\u00a0 During a service to mark its official opening,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/barnabasfund.org\/US\/News\/Archives\/Church-in-Tanzania-bombed-during-inaugural-service-five-killed.html\">a new church in a predominantly Christian suburb was bombed<\/a>, killing at least five people and wounding some 60. \u00a0According to a local source,\u00a0<em>\u201c<\/em><em>This was\u2026 a well-planned attack. Even before it, the threat was given and we still have many threats. Pray for us, and that God will overcome all these in Jesus\u2019 name.\u201d He added that, \u201c<\/em>radical camps in the country were teaching young Muslims that Christians must be killed or live as second-class citizens,\u201d or\u00a0<em>dhimmis<\/em>.\u00a0 Among those arrested, four were Saudi Arabian nationals. The bombing follows the slaying of two church leaders in February, and the shooting in the face of a third on Christmas Day.\u00a0 In October, several church\u00a0buildings\u00a0were\u00a0torched\u00a0and vandalized.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Apostasy, Blasphemy, Proselytism<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt<\/strong>: Twenty-four-year-old Demiana Ebeid Abdelnour, a social studies teacher, was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aina.org\/news\/20130512152332.htm\">fired and arrested<\/a>\u00a0for comparing the late Coptic Pope Shenouda to Islam\u2019s prophet Muhammad, \u201cas well as putting her hand on her neck or her stomach every time she mentioned [Islam\u2019s prophet] Muhammad,\u201d which was interpreted by some students under 10-years-old as disgust. \u00a0She would be the last Coptic Christian victim to be arrested or imprisoned in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.raymondibrahim.com\/islam\/arab-spring-egypts-legal-persecution-of-christians\/\">\u201cdefamation of Islam\u201d spree that began under now ousted President Morsi<\/a>. One Coptic activist wondered, \u201cWhy is defamation of religion a one-way street, only for the benefit of the Muslims, while Christianity is defamed every day?\u201d He added that Sheikh Abu Islam, who tore and burned the Holy Bible, has not been detained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iran<\/strong>: Vahid Hakkani, a Christian prisoner in Shiraz, is suffering from internal digestive bleeding. Although doctors have diagnosed his condition as critical, and have recommended urgent surgery, prison officials have not allowed his transfer to any hospital.\u00a0 Earlier, Hakkani and other Christians were gathered for worship in a house-church when they were arrested \u201cfor participating in house-church services,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mohabatnews.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=6782:one-of-the-christian-prisoners-in-shiraz-in-critical-health-condition&amp;catid=36:iranian-christians&amp;Itemid=279\">evangelizing and promoting Christianity<\/a>, having contact with foreign Christian ministries, propagating against the regime and disturbing national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kashmir<\/strong>:\u00a0 Two Christians accused of carrying out \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fides.org\/en\/news\/33654-ASIA_INDIA_Two_missionaries_who_distributed_biblical_pamphlets_beaten_and_arrested#.UfVkEo2TioM\">acts of proselytism<\/a>,\u201d for distributing pamphlets and publications with biblical passages to some young Muslims, were savagely beaten by a mob, and later arrested by police, \u201cwho rescued them from a secure lynching.\u201d\u00a0 Separately, the \u201cUnited Jihad Council\u201d said that Christian missionaries in Kashmir are \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fides.org\/en\/news\/33608-ASIA_INDIA_Islamic_militants_to_the_Christian_missionaries_Leave_Kashmir#.UfVkmY2TioM\">highly reprehensible<\/a>\u201d and have a \u201chidden agenda [to] exploit the poor and the needy, offering them economic aid to convert them to Christianity,\u201d adding that \u201cIslam is the religion of peace and harmony, and that protects minorities. However, anti-Islam activities [evangelization] cannot be tolerated.\u201d The United Jihad Council accordingly calls on all Christian missionaries \u201cimmediately to leave the valley of Kashmir,\u201d warning, \u201cIf not, they will suffer the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kazakhstan<\/strong>: Despite the nation\u2019s president recently boasting that, \u201cKazakhstan\u00a0is an example to the world of equal rights and freedoms for all citizens\u201d and that, \u201creligious freedom is fully secured\u201d in the country, the Barnabas Fund states that the government \u201chas instructed people to report any individuals who speak about their faith with others in public to the police,\u201d as \u201ctalking about one\u2019s faith with others\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/barnabasfund.org\/US\/News\/Archives\/Repression-in-Kazakhstan-belies-presidents-claims-of-religious-freedom.html\">constitutes missionary activity<\/a>, which requires personal registration\u2026\u00a0 Compulsory prior censorship of all printed and imported religious literature is another way in which the state controls Christian activity. Confiscation of religious books appears to be increasing, with Christians amongst those most likely to be targeted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Morocco<\/strong>: A fatwa by the government\u2019s top Islam authority, partially based on the teachings of Islam\u2019s prophet Muhammad,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/morningstarnews.org\/2013\/05\/christians-in-morocco-fear-fatwa-portends-harsher-treatment\/\">calls for the execution<\/a>\u00a0of those Muslims who leave Islam, causing many Christian converts to live in fear. Lamented one Christian: \u201cThe fatwa showed us that our country is still living in the old centuries\u2014no freedom, no democracy.\u00a0 Unfortunately, we feel that we aren\u2019t protected. We can be arrested or now even killed any time and everywhere. The majority of the Christian Moroccan leaders have the same feeling.\u00a0 We are more followed now by the secret police than before. Only the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ gives us courage and peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saudi Arabia<\/strong>:\u00a0 A Christian Lebanese man, accused of helping a Saudi women convert to Christianity, was<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/World-News\/2013\/05\/13\/Father-to-contest-sentence-in-daughters-conversion-to-Christianity\/UPI-70861368461098\/#ixzz2Z4Z9OxG7\">sentenced to six years in prison and 300 lashes<\/a>.\u00a0 Even so, the father of the woman claims the punishment is not sufficient.\u00a0 The daughter was also sentenced to six years and 300 lashes, causing her to flee, reportedly to Sweden, where authorities are trying to find her and extradite her back to the Arabian peninsula. \u00a0Another man, a Saudi national who reportedly forged a travel document to help the woman flee, was sentenced to two years in jail and 200 lashes.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Dhimmitude<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">[General Abuse of Non-Muslims as Third-Class \u201cCitizens,\u201d or\u00a0<em>Dhimmis<\/em>]<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Central African Republic<\/strong>: Christians are being\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/barnabasfund.org\/US\/News\/Archives\/Reign-of-terror-against-Christians-in-Central-African-Republic.html\">terrorized, killed, and plundered<\/a>\u00a0by Islamic militants, who seized control of the country in March, even as international media and government ignore the crisis.\u00a0 In what one pastor is calling \u201ca reign of terror,\u201d Muslims are tying up, beating and forcing Christians to pay money to save their lives.\u00a0 Many have been killed or wounded.\u00a0 The Barnabas Fund states that \u201crebels have a hit list of pastors and other Christian workers, and that places of worship are being attacked. Christian property is being looted. In one incident towards the end of last month, Seleka [Islamic] troops seized all the collection money given at a gathering of church leaders. \u00a0Many Christians have fled their homes to the countryside and are too fearful to return. More than 200,000 people are internally displaced, while 49,000 refugees have been registered in neighbouring countries.\u201d On 10 May, Human Rights Watch released a report citing \u201cgrave violations\u201d committed by the Seleka rebels against civilians, including pillage, summary executions, rape and torture.\u00a0 One pastor of a besieged church was shot dead when he went out holding a Bible aloft as a sign of peace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt<\/strong>: Mohamed Abu Samra, secretary-general of the Islamic Jihad Party, asserted that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/global.christianpost.com\/news\/you-can-kill-some-christians-today-says-egypts-secretary-general-of-islamic-jihad-party-95175\/#va9C43Z5RbIIIMBx.99\">it is permissible to kill some Christians today<\/a>,\u201d justifying it by adding \u201cThose who came out with weapons, their blood is allowed for us [to spill], as a fighter is not considered\u00a0<em>dhimmi<\/em>.\u201d In Islamic law, a\u00a0<em>dhimmi<\/em>\u00a0is a non-Muslim who is permitted to exist provided he pays monetary tribute and lives as a submissive, lowly subject, according to Koran 9:29. Those Coptic Christian activists who vocally called for the removal of former Islamist president Morsi were not doing that, thereby becoming fair game for killing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indonesia<\/strong>: After an earlier Christmas Eve attack, during which members of Filadelfia Batak Christian Protestant Church were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/barnabasfund.org\/US\/News\/Archives\/Persecuted-pastor-in-Indonesia-facing-legal-action-after-church-attack.html\">pelted with rotten eggs, dung and plastic bags full of urine<\/a>, as the pastor was attempting to leave the scene with his wife, Abdul Aziz, the leader of the mob who had earlier threatened to kill him, moved to attack him. Because the pastor stopped the Muslim agitator\u2019s blow with his hand to protect his wife and himself, he is now facing assault charges.\u00a0 Islamic law, based on the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.raymondibrahim.com\/islam\/how-dare-you-the-supremacist-nature-of-muslim-grievances\/\">Conditions of Omar<\/a>,\u201d forbids Christians from raising their hands to Muslims, even in self-defense.\u00a0 The church has been meeting outside and in homes since its building was sealed off by authorities to appease Islamists in 2010\u2014despite its having met all conditions for a building permit, as well as a Supreme Court ruling that a permit should be granted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pakistan<\/strong>:\u00a0 Over the course of five days, a Muslim mob tortured Javaid Anjum, a Christian teenaged student to death, because he dared drink water from the tap of an Islamic seminary while on a long journey to visit his grandfather.\u00a0 When Muslims discovered he was Christian, they forced him into the seminary, where they\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.catholicherald.co.uk\/article\/14th-may-2004\/4\/pakistan-christian-teenager-tortured-to-death-by-m\">tried to force him to renounce Christianity and convert to Islam<\/a>.\u00a0 When he refused, for five days, Muslim seminary students electrocuted him, broke his arm, and pulled out his fingernails. The electric shocks caused his kidneys to fail and he eventually died.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>About this Series<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because the persecution of Christians in the Islamic world is on its way to reaching pandemic proportions, \u201cMuslim Persecution of Christians\u201d was developed to collate some\u2014by no means all\u2014of the instances of persecution that surface each month. It serves two purposes:<\/p>\n<p>1) To document that which the mainstream media does not: the habitual, if not chronic, Muslim persecution of Christians.<\/p>\n<p>2) To show that such persecution is not \u201crandom,\u201d but systematic and interrelated\u2014that it is rooted in a worldview inspired by Sharia.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, whatever the anecdote of persecution, it typically fits under a specific theme, including hatred for churches and other Christian symbols; sexual abuse of Christian women; forced conversions to Islam; apostasy and blasphemy laws that criminalize and punish with death those who \u201coffend\u201d Islam; theft and plunder in lieu of\u00a0<em>jizya<\/em>\u00a0(financial tribute expected from non-Muslims); overall expectations for Christians to behave like\u00a0<em>dhimmis<\/em>, or second-class, \u201ctolerated\u201d citizens; and simple violence and murder. Sometimes it is a combination.<\/p>\n<p>Because these accounts of persecution span different ethnicities, languages, and locales\u2014from Morocco in the West, to India in the East, and throughout the West wherever there are Muslims\u2014it should be clear that one thing alone binds them: Islam\u2014whether the strict application of Islamic Sharia law, or the supremacist culture born of
