One of the few positive developments following the rise of the Islamists<\/p>\n

\"By<\/a><\/p>\n

during the \u201cArab Spring\u201d is that today many average and\/or nominal Muslims are seeing the true face of Islam and its teachings.\u00a0 And many\u2014as evinced by the June 30 Revolution of Egypt, which saw the ousting of the Muslim Brotherhood\u2014don\u2019t want to deal with it.<\/p>\n

For example, during a recent episode of \u201cWith Dr. Islam Buhira\u201d on Al Qahira Wa Al Nass TV station, Buhira explained how he had attended \u201ca conference in Morocco on the status of women in society post Arab Spring,\u201d and how at the conference, the following interpretation of the Koran by renowned Islamic exegete, al-Qurtubi (d.1273), was read:\u00a0 \u201cWomen are like cows, horses, and camels, for all are ridden.\u201d<\/p>\n

After quoting al-Qurtubi\u2019s words, Dr. Buhira continued, in a disappointed tone: \u201cThis is how al-Qurtubi speaks about women, who include his mother, his daughters\u2014basically all Muslim women.\u00a0 He says they are \u2018all ridden.\u2019\u00a0 This is what makes them similar to animals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hard to believe or not, the idea that \u201cWomen are like cows, horses, and camels, for all are ridden,\u201d\u00a0 is in fact recorded in\u00a0Tafsir al-Qurtubi\u00a0<\/i>(see vol. 17, p. 172), one of the Islamic world\u2019s most authoritative exegeses, or commentary on the teachings of the Koran.<\/p>\n

In fact, comparing women to beasts is not uncommon in Islam and traces back to Prophet Muhammad himself, who is recorded saying, \u201cWomen, dogs, and donkeys annul a man\u2019s prayer\u201d (Musnad Ibn Hanbal<\/em>, vol. 2, p. 2992).<\/p>\n

I first translated and discussed these texts likening women to animals\u00a0in 2008<\/a>, in the context of how female concubines in Islam are not deemed human, as the Arabic relative pronoun used in the Koran to indicate captive sex-slaves is \u201cit\u201d\u2014as in an animal\u2014not \u201cshe\u201d (e.g., Koran 4:3).<\/p>\n

Even so, many Muslims, including women, are only now learning about these texts and teachings.\u00a0 The fact is many Muslims really don\u2019t know much about Islam beyond the Five Pillars.\u00a0 But they have been conditioned to believe that, whatever Sharia says must be laudable and judicious\u2014Sharia being the law of their god as delivered by their beloved prophet. Moreover, in the last couple decades the slogan \u201cIslam is the solution\u201d became popular as a panacea to all of society\u2019s ill.<\/p>\n

That is, until it went from being theory to reality.<\/p>\n

Put differently, now that the Arab Spring has brought Islamists to power\u2014in Tunisia, in Egypt, in Libya, and currently trying (at the tip of the jihadi sword) in Syria\u2014nominal and nonobservant \u201ccultural\u201d Muslims, and they are not a few, who for decades were ruled by Westernized autocrats and media, are finally seeing the true face of Islam and its teachings, in all their minutia, up close and personal.\u00a0 This new acquaintance with the truth is setting some of them free\u2014even as it further enslaves others.<\/p>\n
