{"id":12583,"date":"2020-08-25T06:00:25","date_gmt":"2020-08-25T13:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/victorhanson.com\/wordpress\/?p=12583"},"modified":"2020-08-24T20:11:16","modified_gmt":"2020-08-25T03:11:16","slug":"is-putin-getting-away-with-poisoning-another-political-opponent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/victorhanson.com\/wordpress\/is-putin-getting-away-with-poisoning-another-political-opponent\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Putin getting away with poisoning another political opponent?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>The following article is from my colleague, Paul Roderick Gregory, in The\u00a0Hill<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/person\/aleksei-navalny\">Aleksei Navalny<\/a>, the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation headquartered in Moscow, is one of the last-standing political opponents of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/vladimir-putin\">Vladimir Putin<\/a>. His tightly researched, well-documented reports on the corruption of high-level Kremlin officials have been a thorn in the Kremlin\u2019s side. Not only that, but Navalny has engaged in regional and local politics in a manner that could diminish Putin\u2019s control over the vast Russian Federation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/aug\/20\/a-cup-of-tea-then-screams-of-agony-how-alexei-navalny-was-left-fighting-for-his-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">morning<\/a>&nbsp;of Aug. 20, Navalny was on a flight from Tomsk to Moscow when he began to experience extreme pain and disorientation. The flight was diverted to Omsk, where he was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/feature\/2020\/08\/20\/aleksey-navalnyy-v-kome-kakoy-u-nego-diagnoz-neizvestno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transferred<\/a>&nbsp;to the local hospital in a coma. Omsk doctors hooked him up to a ventilator and listed his condition as comatose, critical but stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Navalny\u2019s travel companions, he did not eat prior to the flight but, in the airport, drank hot tea. (Navalny&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/aug\/20\/a-cup-of-tea-then-screams-of-agony-how-alexei-navalny-was-left-fighting-for-his-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drinking<\/a>&nbsp;tea in the airport and later&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/alexei-navalny-video-putin-critic-screaming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">screaming<\/a>&nbsp;on the plane are both documented on film.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-russia-politics-navalny\/putin-critic-navalny-fights-for-life-aides-suspect-poisoning-idUSKBN25G0F9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;from the hospital maintained that Omsk doctors were not allowing Navalny\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tvrain.ru\/news\/zhena_navalnogo_priehala_v_omskuju_bolnitsu_ee_ne_puskajut_k_muzhu-514679\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wife<\/a>&nbsp;and his personal doctor to see the patient, despite Russian laws that&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consultant.ru\/document\/cons_doc_LAW_121895\/256d3c9ccb172b31210f5f1728fd5a3f538a3cce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guarantee<\/a>&nbsp;such rights.
