Democrat candidates successfully stoked fears that the Republicans would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/28\/us\/politics\/health-care-elections-democrats.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/28\/us\/politics\/health-care-elections-democrats.html?module%3Dinline&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1542226574346000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEjyfwBW8K86AYLRqRmUqnn-eEkNQ\">end<\/a>\u00a0coverage of pre-existing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Despite repeated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/02\/upshot\/republicans-pre-existing-conditions-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/02\/upshot\/republicans-pre-existing-conditions-.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1542226574346000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEjZH690sKqH30Srji2q2YMBHHk3g\">assurances<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/donald-trump\" data-nid=\"261287\">President Trump<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that pre-existing conditions were safe, almost\u00a060 percent of voters said they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/midterm-exit-polls-2018-n932516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/midterm-exit-polls-2018-n932516&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1542226574346000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGp8aHWXGcAHiWESU9R2ovDa9mdtA\">trusted<\/a>\u00a0the Democrats on this issue. This likely provided part of the margin that switched the House from Republican to Democrat control.<\/p>\n<p>If Republicans had hammered home the statistics of health-care coverage, they could have torn down the propaganda that pre-existing conditions could cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/articles\/2016-12-12\/1-in-4-americans-have-pre-existing-conditions-that-could-hinder-coverage-if-obamacare-repealed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/articles\/2016-12-12\/1-in-4-americans-have-pre-existing-conditions-that-could-hinder-coverage-if-obamacare-repealed&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1542226574346000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFxyVSoSkPpW8_cTxLyHNeg711JQw\">one-quarter<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/CCIIO\/Resources\/Forms-Reports-and-Other-Resources\/preexisting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/CCIIO\/Resources\/Forms-Reports-and-Other-Resources\/preexisting.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1542226574346000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEyWsPGSWncAUzeGi0PQup6Ckxe4Q\">one-half<\/a>\u00a0of Americans to be denied coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Although the subject of pre-existing conditions attracts a sympathetic following, relatively few voters are actually at risk of denial for pre-existing conditions.
