Christopher Steele deliberately constructed his Trump dossier to be unverifiable. As long as it remains invalidated, it hangs over the Trump administration, even though the Clinton campaign was\u00a0identified<\/a>\u00a0as its funder and Steele\u00a0refused to vouch<\/a>\u00a0for it under oath. Apparently he did not express such doubts when he was peddling the dossier to a skeptical press.<\/p>\n

Steele purports that his \u201ctrusted sources\u201d for the dossier are high-level Kremlin officials with intimate knowledge of Putin and his inner circle. I have expressed serious\u00a0doubts<\/a>\u00a0about this claim by asking: Why would someone of such elevated rank disclose the Kremlin\u2019s secrets for a few bucks? In the unlikely case they are what Steele claims, Steele has positioned his sources behind an impenetrable firewall.<\/p>\n

The Washington Post\u00a0shows<\/a>\u00a0how this works:<\/p>\n

It is \u201cimpossible to say that the dossier is entirely inaccurate (there are some\u00a0glimmers<\/em>\u00a0[my italics] of accurate predictions)\u2026. it is also impossible to say that it has been broadly validated\u2026.That unsatisfying answer\u2026. gives either side of the political fight all the ammo that it might want.<\/p>\n
