{"id":11470,"date":"2018-10-23T11:23:52","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T18:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/victorhanson.com\/wordpress\/?p=11470"},"modified":"2018-10-23T11:23:52","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T18:23:52","slug":"the-white-privilege-tedium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/victorhanson.com\/wordpress\/the-white-privilege-tedium\/","title":{"rendered":"The White-Privilege Tedium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Victor Davis Hanson \/\/ National Review<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"drop\">W<\/span>hy are current monotonous slogans like \u201cwhite privilege\u201d and \u201cold white men\u201d finally losing their currency?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Who exactly is \u201cwhite\u201d in a multiracial, intermarried, and integrated society?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>How do we determine who is a purported victim of racial bias \u2014 relative degrees of nonwhite skin color, DNA badges, an ethnicized last name, or nomenclature with two or three accent marks?<\/p>\n<p>The reason that Arab-, Greek-, or Italian-Americans are more likely to be branded or to self-identify as \u201cwhite\u201d than Brazilian-, Argentinian, Spanish-, or Mexican-Americans doesn\u2019t necessarily have anything to do with appearance or their DNA or their ancestors\u2019 or their own historical experience in America. It has everything to do with the perversities of the devolving diversity industry in which claims to victimization bring greater careerist advantage or at least psychological satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>The recent farce involving Elizabeth Warren\u2019s \u201cancestry\u201d has not only probably aborted her presidential aspirations, but \u2014 along with the Asian-American lawsuit against Harvard\u2019s admission practices \u2014 also reminded us of the growing corruption of race-based set-asides. Warren\u2019s desperate gambit was simply a response to the new reality that minority status often has little relation with appearance.
