He is the chair of the Hoover Institution\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoover.org\/research-teams\/military-historycontemporary-conflict-working-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Working Group<\/a>\u00a0on the Role of Military History in Contemporary Conflict, which met in early October to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoover.org\/news\/military-history-workshop-explores-great-power-rivalries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discuss<\/a>\u00a0whether the United States is entering a new great power landscape.\u00a0A\u00a0great power\u00a0is a\u00a0sovereign state\u00a0that exerts influence on a global scale, whether through military, economic, diplomatic or so-called \u201csoft\u201d power methods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cCalibrated and Planned\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hanson describes China\u2019s rise as \u201ccalibrated and planned\u201d in the areas of economics and national security.
