George Orwell published Animal Farm in August 1945, in the closing weeks of the Pacific War. Even then, most naïve supporters of the wartime Soviet-British-American alliance were no longer in denial about the contours of Moscow’s impending postwar communist aggression.
The short, allegorical novel’s human-like farm animals replay the transition of supposedly 1917 revolutionary Bolsheviks into cynical 1930s Stalinists. Thereby, they remind us that leftist totalitarianism inevitably becomes far worse than the supposed parasitical capitalists they once toppled.
Orwell saw that the desire for power stamps out all ideological pretenses. It creates an untouchable ruling clique central to all totalitarian movements. Beware, he warns, of the powerful who claim to help the helpless.

Great article. Scary. Reminds me of what H.L. Mencken said: "The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule."
The basic problem historically is rationality vs emotionalism. Thinking vs feeling. Feeling vs emotions as in drama vs reality. Caring industry vs rational/thinking industry=health industry. MYTH VS OBJECTIVE, Aristotle vs Plato's out of touch with reality. Action, Idealism, Guardian, and Technology - all four quadrants of what is the puzzle of the population before ancient time, and the cause of all the discontent of humanity. Today's what ails us. Selfishness the concept core value to correct the problem.
Tragically, Orwell is no longer on high school reading lists in most public schools. I read Orwell when I was a student over 50 years ago and his writings and forewarnings have been in the back of my mind ever since (and in today's world totally on my mind). The Leftist school boards and teachers refer to Orwell as a Dead White Male oppressor not worthy of reading. Of course, it is his very writings that threaten them.
