I visited the Vatican City in 1982 with my wife; her aunt was the Mother Superior for a group of nuns who took care of the living spaces of the Coptic Ethiopian Scholars living in the Vatican. To get in, we had to pass through a gauntlet of Swiss (?) Guards all carrying Beretta machine-pistols who checked our passports and had my wife's aunt come to meet us at the gate and vouch for us. The walls of the Vatican City were made of that flat, Italian-style brick, and were easily 25 feet thick and quite tall. Apparently, walls work. --Old Guy
